Club Selection
Although may tour professionals have a favorite club they use the majority of the time when chipping, the rest of us should learn to chip with different clubs to match the length shot we need. Â You can chip with just about any club. Â You need to learn the different carry/roll ratios that you can expect with any given club. Â For example a 4-iron will not carry very far but it will roll a long way once it hits the green, while with the same length swing a sand wedge will carry the ball a similar distance but it will stop much quicker on landing.
Here are some ratios of air to roll time:
1/4 air time: 3/4 roll time = 7-iron
1/3 air time: 2/3 roll time = 9-iron
1/2 air time: 1/2 roll time=PW
2/3 air time: 1/3 roll time=SW
3/4 air time: 1/4 roll time=LW
Use this chart as a guide to help determine what club to select to produce the appropriate air time: roll time ratio.

Practice hitting chips to the same target with different clubs to get the feel for the air:roll ratio
